Seaton Estate: Where Nature, Wellness, and Community Thrive

SA LANDSCAPE MAGAZINE

Seaton Estate, set along KwaZulu-Natal’s north coast, is redefining coastal living by weaving nature, wellness, and community into every aspect of its design. With 1.1 km of direct beach frontage and over 217 hectares of land—anchored by 94 hectares of natural open space—the development offers more than luxury homes: it offers a lifestyle rooted in rewilding and ecological restoration.

A Nature-First Vision

Landscape architect Bernice Rumble of Land Art Studio led the estate’s landscape design with one clear principle: nature first. This guiding philosophy emerged from an extensive environmental process that identified the property’s unique biomes—coastal dune forest, coastal grasslands, wetlands, and marine edge. The vision is to restore and rewild these areas, ensuring biodiversity thrives while enhancing residents’ quality of life.

Seaton embraces the concept of “blue zones”—regions known for longevity and wellness—by creating spaces that encourage natural movement, community living, and stress reduction. Trails, parks, horse paddocks, and outdoor communal areas are designed to connect residents with nature and each other.

Lifestyle Rooted in Wellness

The estate’s design incorporates elements that foster wellbeing and outdoor living:

  • Move naturally: Trails for family walks, cricket ovals, luna decks for stargazing, and open valleys for play.

  • Build community: Parks, rewilded valleys, and sports facilities that bring people together.

  • Find purpose and reduce stress: Expansive landscapes and “Luna moments” (like whale watching, meditation spots, and seasonal cycles) that invite reflection and calm.

  • Intergenerational living: A lifestyle that attracts all ages, encouraging connection and shared support.

Rewilding for the Future

Rewilding at Seaton goes beyond landscaping—it’s a quiet restoration process that respects natural cycles. Indigenous flora such as Phoenix reclinata (wild date palm) and Melinis repens (red top grass) are re-establishing themselves, stabilising soil and creating habitats for local wildlife.

Instead of importing vast amounts of topsoil, the team uses innovative soil improvement methods like Vitasoil and locally produced mulches to enhance microbial activity and regeneration naturally. This sustainable approach ensures long-term ecological health.

Architecture in Harmony with Nature

Designed by Brent Buchanan of Nsika Architecture & Design, Seaton’s gatehouse is more than just an entry point—it’s a land-art bridge that integrates seamlessly with the terrain. Inspired by European wildlife bridges, it allows people, cyclists, and even horses to cross while remaining immersed in the landscape.

Inside, it houses essential estate facilities—security, management offices, and a central mobility hub—while the roof garden serves as both a sustainable green feature and a scenic pathway.

A Symbol of Balance

For developer Collins Residential Group, Seaton Estate represents a balance between human needs and the natural world. It is a place where rewilded landscapes, coastal living, and community come together to create an environment that nurtures wellbeing, longevity, and ecological resilience.

As Rumble notes, “We interfere where we have to and leave nature to do the rest.”

Seaton Estate isn’t just a development—it’s a living, breathing ecosystem designed for the future.
