Fast lane to progress

Construction on the North Coast’s first new interchange on the N2 in almost a decade will begin in October.

The multi-million rand project between Salt Rock and Tinley Manor finally received approval from the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) last week, opening the way for developers Collins Residential to begin work. The developers plan to open the interchange in the third quarter of 2025. Upon completion, the interchange will be handed over to Sanral, followed by a commissioning period for traffic lights.

Trenley Tilbrook of Collins Residential expressed his excitement about finally entering the construction phase.

“Once completed, it will not only relieve traffic pressure at the existing Salt Rock off-ramp but also support future growth in the region.”

Despite the scale of the project, Tilbrook gave the assurance that traffic disruption would be kept to a minimum.

“Most of the work will be away from the existing main road. Disruption of traffic will only occur when we connect the new ramps to the P228 and N2 north of the Salt Rock turnoff.”

Although the journey to this point has been cumbersome, residents are optimistic over the lasting benefits it will bring.

Ward councillor Privi Makhan described it as a significant milestone for the area.

“We look forward to the alleviation of traffic congestion, along with the improved transport infrastructure. Developers such as Collins Residential are setting a fantastic precedent, and we anticipate seeing more developers adhering to their conditions of establishment within the prescribed timeframes,” said Makhan.

Collins Residential recently completed a full upgrade of the Salt Rock and Sheffield Beach roads (P330/P474). The new traffic lights, widened roadways, and slip lanes have considerably improved traffic flow.
